Just came across a post from January 2008 by Kevin Kelly Better than Free that I believe is a much more productive place to start a discussion about charging for content.
Kevin Kelly points to several ways to add value to content to make it "Better than Free": Immediacy, Personalization, Interpretation, Authenticity, Accessibility, Embodiment, Patronage, Findability.
Discussing the relative importance of these subjectively, adding to the list (I would add Camaraderie and Community) would be a valuable use of time. Also, relating this discussion to other information, for example, Cluetrain The Longing and Ruder Finn research on why people use the internet.
Working on a way we could field an event where many of the interesting people I've been listening to could go somewhere with this discussion!
